With UK’s economy considerably increasing and depending on Intellectual Property, the focus of the United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) has been totally on increasing the IP mandates for the corporate. Multiple changes were made in the law to simplify the process of applying for or getting an IP. The amendment to Patent Law makes a single office serve the whole UK for granting patents. Moreover, to make the system more accessible for inventors, the application process was simplified. The primary aim is to engage more customers and inventors in getting their IP registered in a fair and simplified manner. It’s all because Innovation and IP are central to the economy of the UK. With a stronger IP regime, the overall growth involving the service class and workers will be visible with a stronger investment in these sectors eventually contributing to the overall economy and standing. The primary aim for this is to structure that IP should not be only for the elite group and must be equally available for different groups. The Corporate Plan 2021/22 by UKIPO aims for a strong IP strategy for the Corporate.

The Corporate Plan

UKIPO has strategized their priorities for achieving their goals for which they aim for providing excellent IP services. With this, they aim for creating a world-leading IP environment, making IPO a brilliant place to work in. The priorities include the transformation of their services for high-quality IP rights services, making it more consumer-focused. With more patent, trademark, and design backlogs, the priority is also to decrease the backlogs caused due to pandemic and additional workload. IP, playing a key role in unleashing innovation, is important to work across government and other stakeholders for ensuring that external impact increases. With this, the aim is that the domestic IP framework gives UK a competitive edge targeting the international markets enabling UK businesses to grow. The strategy also pertains to the ‘One IPO’ culture aiming to support all people to contribute and make sure the future organizational needs with stronger leadership development. Therefore, this corporate plan aims for the approach of striving hard for consumer, efficiency and support the economy with people on a higher pedestal.

Talking about the ministerial targets, it has been divided into three main components. Firstly, with more focus on customer services, secondly, focus on the changes required for IP services, and thirdly, the focus on having a strong efficiency target in consonance with the commitment towards providing efficient services. The plan aims for efficient customer satisfaction of 85% in Q4. Moreover, consulting changes for patent and copyright law and presenting a recommendation to ministers in Q4. The plan targets to achieve efficiencies worth at least 3.5% of their core operating costs.

UK has one of the best IP systems in the world aims for being the strongest IP offices and for this the plan aims that they deliver excellent IP services with a leading IP environment. The focus is on IPO to make it a brilliant place to work. despite the pandemic, the office ensures that all the support was provided demonstrating the best ‘One IPO’ spirit. The plan also prioritizes making the IP office more efficient. Within efficiency, the services that are provided must be transformed helping the country for becoming more innovative and creative. Streamlining and modernizing the process and structure will help to provide more effective services. With the completion of the mobilization phase, the office is ready for the five-year transformation change program. With this, and with the building of ‘One IPO foundation’ where the IPO aims to bring three IP rights –patents, trademark, and design under one common system, the IPO is moving further for providing accessible IP services to customers. This will help in a recreation of the current process and system and the value addition to the economy of Britain.

The plan aims to work with key stakeholders having a strong commitment towards the IP regime. Working closely with customers, applicants, right holders to understand their needs is what the plan aims for. For easy management of information and accessing their patent rights, they also aim to develop prototypes for their new user account services for efficient management. With this corporate plan, UK is on the right path to provide new and efficient services for the overall development of the economy which is largely based on IP.
